The Czech legend retired in 2019 after losing the UEFA Europa League final with Arsenal, and was currently involved with the Blues in a front-office job.

In what can only be categorized as a shock move, Chelsea have turned to a familiar face to try and solve their problems under the sticks.

Earlier today, reports started flowing in about the Blues' decision to add retired goalkeeper Petr Cech to the team's Premier League roster on a non-contract basis. The 38-year old was included in the squad as an emergency goalkeeper in case any of their shot-stoppers are not available due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cech had retired in 2019 after he lost the 2019 UEFA Europa League with Arsenal precisely against Chelsea. Since then, he had joined the Blues as a technical and performance advisor, but he seems willing to put on the goalkeeping gloves once again if needed.

The move was explained by Chelsea's front office in a brief press release.

"Cech was included as a precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions currently caused by the Covid-19 crisis," the club stated.

Even if Chelsea's reasons to keep Cech around have to do with the pandemic, the team's crisis under the sticks could be behind this decision. Kepa Arrizabalaga has frequently been panned by fans and experts for his poor skills as Chelsea's goalie, while backup Willy Caballero has also had his fair share of mistakes. Moreover, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy recently joined the London-based club, but he has not established himself as the No.1 option for Frank Lampard due to his recent hiring and an injury.

Cech played over 300 games for Chelsea, with four Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy as part of his resume with the Blues. Now, the 39-year-old will have a chance to add to that resume on the pitch despite retiring from professional football almost 18 months ago.
