After a bad start to their Serie A campaign, Lazio will hope to recover as they welcome high-flying Dortmund for matchday one in the Champions League.

Lazio have been in terrible form since the current Serie A campaign start, and will come into this match having slumped to a surprise 3-0 loss to Sampdoria. The result was especially surprising given that Sampdoria had battled with relegation throughout last season and this latest poor performance from the Aquile sees them sitting just one point away from the drop zone. It's an especially disappointing start considering how Simone Inzaghi's men actually led the league table at one point last campaign, but notably suffered a mid-season collapse and had to settle for fourth spot once the term came to a close.

That malaise appears to have carried over into the current season, as the Biancocelesti have won just one of their first four league games. The suspension of key striker Ciro Immobile, who won last season's Capocannoniere as well as the European Golden Shoe has certainly impacted the side, but he'll be back to face his former team and try to open his account as the hosts look to shake off their poor domestic form. They've yet to win at home this season, as their sole win, a 2-0 result against Cagliari was on the road. In fact, Lazio have picked up just one point from their two home games so far, with a one-one draw with Inter following a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Atalanta, who are keen on showing they ought to be taken seriously as top four contenders in Serie A.

Meanwhile, despite narrowly losing this year's DFL Super Cup to bitter rivals Bayern, Dortmund have been in excellent form in the Bundesliga. Die Schwarzgelben have won three of their last four matches without conceding a single goal, and sit in third place in the league table. After crashing out in the round of 16 last season as PSG managed to overturn a 2-1 deficit, Dortmund will be hoping to take advantage of a relatively easier group in order to ensure they finish top of their quartet to avoid a tough opponent in the round of 16. With Club Brugge and Zenit Saint Petersburg in this group, Dortmund do look like the big favorites to finish top, but will want to hit the ground running against a Lazio team who could prove to be their major challenge for heading into the round of 16 as group winners.

Lazio: Simone Inzaghi will have to deal with a host of absentees ahead of this clash. Skipper Senad Lulic is out with an ankle injury, while Andreas Pereira is dealing with a COVID-19 diagnosis. Additional players who will miss this game include shot-stopper Silvio Proto (arm) and defender Stefan Radu (hamstring). In addition, Bastos, Manuel Lazzarri and Luiz Felipe are all doubt as a result of hamstring and ankle injuries respectively.

Dortmund: The visitors will be also missing several players for this match. Emre Can is suspended, while both Dan-Alex Zagadou and Marco Schmelzer are out with knee injuries. Meanwhile Nico Schulz is also on the treatment table due to a calf injury while Lukasz Piszczek and Thorgan Hazard are both in doubts due to an eye injury and muscular issues respectively.
