VAR gifts Uruguay first 2022 FIFA WCQ goal

Uruguay make history with first goal caused by a controversial VAR call

October 8, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
El Pistolero made the most of the spot kick to give Uruguay the lead, although Alexis Sánchez would go on to equalize minutes later.

VAR technology had not been used in FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches in South America, and it's first appearance will surely raise some eyebrows among football fans.

During the game between Uruguay and Chile, referee Eber Aquino decided to use the technological tool to determine if a Chilean defender had deflected a cross with his hand. Aquino decided promptly that the deflection by the Chilean defense came via a handball, but he seemed to omit the fact that the ball hit the player's thigh first before eventually reaching his hand.

Curiously, the decision was enough to se Uruguay scoring the first goal of the South American qualifiers via a precise spot kick by Luis Suárez, who increased his tally as La Celeste's all-time top scorer.

Have a look at Suárez's first goal of the FIFA WCQ (Image might be geo-restricted).
