Transfer: Atletico Madrid reach agreement with Barcelona to sign Luis Suarez

September 22, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Los Colchoneros have everything in place to bring the Uruguay international to the Wanda Metroplitano.

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have finally reached an agreement over the transfer of Luis Suarez. The news comes after Alvaro Morata sealed a one year loan move from the former to Juventus on Tuesday evening.

The future of Luis Suarez has been up in the air since the appointment of new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman. Following the arrival of the former Netherlands national team boss, the 33-year-old striker was informed to secure a move elsewhere as he was not regarded as part of plans.

On Monday, a report by Sky Italia revealed that the former Liverpool forward had agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid ahead of a free transfer. However and to the annoyance of the Uruguayan, the move was halted by the Barcelona hierarchy on the basis that he fee must be made off his transfer as he was joining a local rival.

As a reaction to this, Suarez purportedly threatened to call a press conference in which he will voice out his grievances against the club that was forcing him out. He also informed them of his intention to stay - whether he plays or not - and collect the full amount of his salary of the remaining year should they decide against sanctioning his move to Madrid.

However, there have been swift developments in the past 24 hours and an agreement has finally been struck. Per reports from Spain, the attacker will sign a two year deal and earn €7.5 million per season. Barcelona, on the other hand, will also be paid €4 million should Atletico Madrid progress to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions in those two years.

Luis Suarez had his final season with Barcelona plagued by injuries but bows out of Camp Nou by registering 198 goals in 283 games in all competitions. He won four La Liga and Copa del Rey titles apiece, one Champions League, two Supercopa de España, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. In terms of individual honors, he won both La Liga Pichichi Trophy and the Copa del Rey top scorer awards in the 2015/2016 season.
