Things couldn't have gone better for Portugal in the previous edition of the UEFA Nations League, as A Seleccao claimed the tournament's title with their 1-0 win over the Netherlands. Previously, Portugal won their group over Italy and Poland, and they managed to make it to the title match thanks to a 3-1 win over Switzerland, where Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick.

Croatia's performance in the last edition of the tournament was the exact opposite, as the red and white side finished the group stage in last place of Group 4. The Croatian side was supposed to be relegated to League B, but the change of format in the competition allowed them to keep their spot in League A.

Portugal will be playing their first match of the year due to the coronavirus outbreak. Before that, the Portuguese side had won five of their last six games, keeping three clean sheets in the process and conceding only five goals during that run. Croatia will make it to this game on a six-game unbeaten streak, with four wins and two draws in that run. Dalic's men dropped points due to one-all draws against Azerbaijan and Wales, the last of those coming on October 13.
