Preview: PSG vs Bayern

At long last, the 2020 UEFA Champions League final has finally arrived, and in a year that has been quite unprecedented due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this final itself will be equally historic. For the first time, PSG and Bayern will lock horns in the final. It will also be the fourth time a French and German side meet in a European final, and PSG will be hoping to end French side's hoodoo at this stage as they've lost all three of the prior meetings.

This season also saw no Spanish, Italian, or English team featuring in the final four for the first time in over two decades, with the semi-finals comprised of two French sides (Lyon and PSG) and two German teams (Leipzig and Bayern).

For PSG, their journey to their first ever final has been a frustrating and long awaited experience. Ever since the French giants were taken over by Qatar Sports Investments, the club's wealthy owners have been desperately keen to help Les Parisiens establish themselvs among Europe's elite sides. Yet, despite dominating in France, they've repeatedly come up short.

Until now. So far, Thomas Tuchel's side have already won four trophies in domestic competition, including the league title after Ligue 1 ended early as the COVID virus spread from Wuhan to France. Should they win this match, it will not only make it PSG's first ever Champions League trophy, but would help the team become the first side in French football history to win five trophies in a single season.

PSG come into this match having cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over ambitions, yet young side Lepizig in the semi-finals. Heading into that match, they were the second highest scoring side in the Champions League, with 22 goals, and in keeping another clean sheet, made sure their defensive record remains quite solid; so far they've only conceded five goals in this competition. Only Bayern, who had scored a massive 39 (prior to their win over Lyon) have done better offensively than Les Parisiens. They've conceded eight times so far.

Barring a frustrating 2-2 draw with Real Madrid - during which they conceded their only goals of the group stage - PSG were absolutely flawless during the early stages of the tournament. They also recovered quite well from a 2-1 deficit against Dortmund in the round of 16 to beat die Schwarzgelben 2-0 at the Parc des Princes. Although debutants Atalanta were determined to get stuck in and park the bus after taking a narrow 1-0 lead during the quarter-finals, PSG's overall superiority and experience eventually came through and they were able to dispatch the Bergamo-based side with two late goals to book their spot to the final four, where they had no issues dealing with a Leipzig side who no longer have top goalscorer Timo Werner in their ranks.

Bayern, however, will obviously present their toughest opponent so far of this competition. Since being taken over by Hansi Flick, die Roten have been at their usual top standard, as they swept all opponents aside to easily clinch a domestic double. The Bavarians have been excellent as well so far in the Champions League, winning all six of their group stage games without much fuss, including humiliating last season's finalists Tottenham 7-2 at Spurs' own home ground.

In the round of 16, they crushed Frank Lampard's young Chelsea side 7-1 on aggregate, with Robert Lewandowski involved in all of the team's goals. But they saved arguably their best showing for when they took on Barcelona, effectively nullifiying Lionel Messi as they humiliated the Blaugrana to record as historic 8-2 victory in the semi-finals.

Bayern, of course, are no strangers to humiliating Barcelona en route to the finals; they did so back in the 2013 season when they crushed them 7-0 on aggregate over two legs. However, this match was even more notable as eight goals were scored in just one game, and die Roten indeed could have netted a couple more to inflict more damage on the Spanish side had they been able to convert their chances.

Lyon, who like Leipzig had surprised many by getting to the final four, were determined to try to make life difficult for Bayern. After all, Rudi Garcia's side were growing in confidence after beating both Juventus and Manchester City, and many players had started to dream of the possibility of an all-French final against PSG on August 23rd. However, Bayern weren't going to let that happen, and when their opponents failed to seize an advantage, they pounced, sweeping Les Gones aside 3-0 in order to book their first final ticket since winning this competition in 2013. They have won all ten of their games so far, which is quite promising ahead of the final. PSG, meanwhile, have won eight of their Champions League games, losing one and drawing one.

Lewandowski, to date, has been unstoppable in front of goal, with the Polish ace grabbing 55 goals across all comps and 15 in this competition. That includes his second Champions League poker of his career as he scored four against Serbian minnows Red Star Belgrade during the group stages, and he only needs two more to match Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 17 from the 2013/2014 term.

Given that the 32 year old has scored in all of Bayern's knock-out matches so far, one would be remiss to bet against him continuing that strong record as he features in his second Champions League final of his career.

However, unlike in 2013, during which he was on the losing side as Dortmund had to settle for a runners-up medal, Lewandowski will obviously be hoping to join the likes of Thomas Muller as a Treble winner this time around.

Curiously enough, this final will be the first in 22 years that features the winners of their domestic leagues - so in essence, it's a "true" Champions League final. Both teams are on course to make history - but only one will be able to write a happy final ending to what's been a very successful European campaign by both sides.

Team news: PSG vs Bayern

PSG: No notable injuries or suspensions. First choice shot-stopper Keylor Navas has apparently shaken off an injury suffered during his team's win over Atalanta and looks set to feature in the final.

Bayern: Veteran defender Jerome Boateng is struggling with muscular issues and could end up having to sit this one out. However, French defender Benjamin Pavard made his return following an ankle injury for the match against Lyon and so will be available for selection. It remains, however, to be seen whether the 2018 World Cup winner will play in this match.
