New York Red Bulls will host New York City FC in the seventeenth edition of the Hudson River Derby at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. ET.

New York is known for its melting pot of rivalries across different sports. In baseball, you have the Yankees and Mets. In basketball, you have the Knicks and Nets. In American football, you have the Giants and Jets. And in soccer, you have the MLS's Hudson River Derby between New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls.

NYCFC and NY Red Bulls will go toe-to-toe on Thursday night for three points and bragging rights, which in some cases are more important than points.

Despite reaching the MLS is Back Tournament quarterfinal stage, the Blues find themselves in 13th place in the Eastern Conference table and in dire need of three points. NYCFC dropped its two games to Columbus and Toronto before the season came to a stop. Then came the tournament in Orlando where they were able to squeeze out three points against Inter Miami after losing to Orlando City and Philadelphia.

The Red Bulls enter this matchup in the 6th spot of the Eastern Conference table. Their start of the season was very different from their cross-river rivals, defeating Cincinnati and tying Real Salt Lake. However, it was City that claimed the fourth wildcard spot in the MLS is Back Tournament, advancing to the round of 16 by just one goal in goal differential.

NY Red Bulls vs NYCFC: Rivalry History

The Red Bulls were the only MLS team in town for almost two decades until English club Manchester City and the New York Yankees partnered to create NYCFC. The Cityzens began playing in Yankee Stadium in the Bronx in 2015 and have made it to playoffs every year since 2016. Also, they are the defending Eastern Conference regular-season champions. However, they have not won any trophies, something that NYRB accomplished for the first time in 2013, winning the Supporters Shield and twice again since their rivals were introduced in the MLS. The Red Bulls lead the series record 9W-5L-2D.

NY Red Bulls vs NYCFC: Players to Watch

NY Red Bulls – Kyle Duncan

With one goal and two assists so far in the 2020 MLS season, right back Kyle Duncan is the Red Bulls’ player to watch ahead of the derby. A Brooklyn native, Duncan is a product of the Red Bulls academy who has experience in France’s League 2 with Valenciennes. He returned to the U.S. in 2019 and made 13 appearances last season. Duncan has sealed his spot as a starter this season with five starts in five games.

NYCFC – Valentin Castellanos

Twenty-one-year-old striker Valentin Castellanos will look to shine in his first-ever Hudson River Derby. He was able to bag in one goal for the club during the MLS is Back Tournament from the penalty spot. However, he only has one goal contribution in 608 minutes of play. To be fair, NYCFC have suffered injury woes and enter this match without Ismael Tajouri-Shradi (hamstring), Gedion Zelalem (knee) and possibly Maxi Moralez (calf) who is listed as questionable. These setbacks have not only hurt the club, but also the young Argentinian forward who has lacked service from teammates.
