The Red Devils lined up with a number of familiar faces in the European cup competition amiss.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed the reason for starting De Gea in post after Manchester United fans expressed dissatisfaction over his choice of goalkeeper for Sunday Europa League semi-final encounter with Sevilla. The Old Trafford faithful were left to question the fate of their side following the Norwegian coach's decision to replace Sergio Romero with the Spaniard.

For the first time this season, Manchester United entered a Europa League match without their second-choice goalkeeper. Having picked up seven cleansheets in all appearances this season, the 33-year-old Argentine was demoted to the bench with David De Gea being preferred.

With the latter becoming susceptible to making errors in recent times, many insisted that Romero deserved to keep his place. Such was the case in 2017 when then-manager Jose Mourinho favored the selection of the former Sampdoria shot-stopper up until the end of United's triumphant Europa League campaign.

Meanwhile, in midfield, Nemanja Matic was also demoted to accommodate Fred, another call which many suggested was wrong. In the build-up to the encounter, Solskjaer stated the De Gea was deserving of a starting berth as he had impressed in the training session held ahead of the game.

"It's a difficult call when Sergio has played well.

"But David has looked really good in training and looks ready. Made good saves against Sevilla last game, let's hope for more of the same tonight."
