MLS is Back Tournament: Round of 16 overview and broadcast information

The MLS is Back Tournament will kick off its knockout phase on Saturday, July 25. Let’s take a look at the matchups, and when and where to watch the games.

Sixteen teams remain after 16 days and 36 games of pure North American soccer. The MLS is Back Tournament has entered its knockout phases where there will be no room for mistakes.

Opening on Saturday, July 25, and closing on Tuesday, July 28, the round of 16 will feature two matchups each day. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals, while the losers will pack up their things and return home to prepare for the rest of the season.

Orlando City vs Montreal Impact – July 25 at 8 p.m. ET

Tournament hosts Orlando City, and the Montreal Impact will launch knock-out round play on Saturday, July 25, at 8 p.m. ET.

Orlando finished in first place of Group A tied with the Philadelphia Union in points, seven, but edging them on goal differential by one. On the other hand, Group C's third-place finishers Montreal secured one of the four wildcard slots after a lone 1-0 win over DC United.

Philadelphia Union vs New England Revolution – July 25 at 10:30 p.m. ET

The Philadelphia Union and the New England Revolution will go head-to-head on the second playoff game of the tournament scheduled for July 25 at 10:30 p.m. ET.

The Union gained an automatic spot in the round of 16 after winning its two opening Group A matches against New York City FC and Inter Miami. Meanwhile, the New England Revolution come into this meeting having finished second in Group C with the same amount of points and goal differential as Toronto but separated by goals scored.

Toronto FC vs New York City FC – July 26 at 8:30 p.m. ET

Group C's top seed Toronto FC will meet a very fortunate New York City FC side on Sunday, July 26, at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Toronto finished atop Group C despite only winning one game and drawing twice. The Reds head into the round of 16 with 21-year-old forward Ayo Akinola finding the back of the net five times. However, New York City FC will look to pull an upset on Sunday night. The boys in blue clinched the fourth and final wildcard slot after LA Galaxy leveled the Houston Dynamo, a result that would see both sides out and NYCFC in the next round.

Sporting Kansas City vs Vancouver Whitecaps – July 26 at 11 p.m. ET

Sporting Kansas City and the Vancouver Whitecaps will meet for the late-night game on Sunday, July 26, at 11 p.m. ET.

SKC finished first in Group D, also known as the group of death, losing its first game but finished strong winning its next two over Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids. In contrast, the Whitecaps finished third in Group B, clinching a wildcard slot following what some might call a lucky 2-0 win in their final group stage match over Chicago. The Whitecaps were outshot 27 to 4 but managed to be clinical with their chances.

San Jose Earthquakes vs Real Salt Lake – July 27 at 8:30 p.m. ET

The San Jose Earthquakes and Real Salt Lake will meet on Monday, July 27, at 8:30 p.m. ET.

San Jose has looked sharp so far in the tournament, finishing first in Group B with seven points. Despite drawing in their opening match, the Quakes went on to defeat the Vancouver Whitecaps and Chicago Fire. However, rivals Real Salt Lake, which finished third in Group D, will hope to outwork San Jose to progress to the quarterfinals.

Seattle Sounders vs Los Angeles FC – July 27 at 11 p.m. ET

The Seattle Sounders taking on Los Angeles FC on Monday, July 27, at 11 p.m. ET is one for fans to look forward to.

The Sounders improved since the first game that saw them lose 2-1 by drawing and winning the succeeding two group stage games. Brian Schmetzer will have to prepare his defense to go up against the best offensive side of the tournament, LAFC. Los Angeles has produced 11 goals over three games with Diego Rossi claiming six. Nonetheless, forwards Bradley Wright-Phillips and Brian Rodriguez will be a menace in LA's attacking third, especially with players like Eduard Atuesta and Latiff Blessing supporting them.

Columbus Crew vs Minnesota United – July 28 at 8 p.m. ET

The Columbus Crew and Minnesota United will meet on Tuesday, July 28, at 8 p.m. in what some see as the most anticipated round of 16 fixture.

The Crew is the only team in the MLS is Back Tournament that collected all nine points in group stages defeating Atlanta United, Cincinnati and New York Red Bulls. A clear favorite going into the knockout rounds, the Crew will face a tough task in beating Minnesota United. The Loons emerged from Group D, which some call the group of death, winning their first match against SKC and tying the following two against Real Salt Lake and Colorado.

Portland Timbers vs Cincinnati FC – July 28 at 10:30 p.m. ET

The Portland Timbers and Cincinnati FC will feature in the MLS is Back Tournament's last round of 16 match on Tuesday, July 28, at 10:30 p.m. ET.

The Timbers showed that they are one of the toughest teams in the tournament finishing first above LAFC in Group F. Moreover, Giovanni Savarese entered his third and last group stage game against LAFC without his preferred starting 11 but still managed to find a 2-2 draw that saw Portland crowned as group winners. However, they will face a rejuvenated Cincinnati FC side that managed to finish second in Group E above the Red Bulls and Atlanta United.
