Setién set to continue as Barcelona boss?

Barcelona president comes clean about the team's plans regarding Setién

July 13, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
President Bartomeu also took the opportunity to soften his stance against the Video Assistant Referee, among other topics.

Those who thought that Quique Setién's days at Camp Nou's dugout were numbered have been handed a serious blow by president Josep María Bartomeu, who practically confirmed that the coach will keep working with the club for the 2020-21 season.

Speaking in an interview with the Spanish TV channel TV3, Bartomeu practically confirmed that Setién will be sitting inside the team's dugout next season, even if the team is not able to win either La Liga or the UEFA Champions League.

"Quique Setién will be in charge of the team for the rest of La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. Our will is to see his contract reach its end, and Setién's deal concludes next season. When we  went to his house recently, we were there to talk about our future with him," Bartomeu said.

On that note, Bartomeu ruled out that the decision to remove Setién from his current position will not be on his hands.

"If we decided to hire someone else, that decision would fall in the hands of Eric Abidal and Ramón Planes," Bartomeu added.

The current president named Xavi as one of the potential candidates to take over as Barcelona coach, but he refused to state if such an appointment would come under his tenure as Barcelona's main man, which is set to end next season.

"Xavi's time to coach Barcelona will come, sooner or later. We just have to give it time. Either way, I want to be emphatic on one thing: we are not looking for a new coach right now," Bartomeu concluded.

The president also tried to soften his recent words against VAR technology, following a mountain of criticism for his poor public relations and timing on this matter.

"VAR should be as good as the league we play in. This is the best domestic tournament out there, and it should be up to meet the expectations. There have been certain decisions that have helped a certain rival, but we are only asking for the criteria to be the same for everyone. We want technology to help, especially with football's fast pace these days," Bartomeu stated.
