Bartomeu facing fine over VAR-Real Madrid remark

Barcelona president facing fine after suggesting VAR favors Real Madrid

July 6, 2020 By Ali M.
Bartomeu suggested that Video Assistant Referee has shown bias towards Los Blancos and that statement hasn't gone unnoticed.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu could be in hot water after recent remarks he made about VAR and Real Madrid. The Blaugrana chief recently weighed in on the controversy surrounding the technology in Los Blancos’ recent games and even went as far as hinting at its bias towards the league leaders.

In the Madrid giants most recent game, a 1-0 win over Athletic Club, VAR awarded a penalty to Zidane’s side over a foul on Marcelona. However, an incident involving Raul Garcia and Sergio Ramos inside the Blancos penalty box sparked a huge debate as the Spanish center-back appeared to stamp on the Athletic ace’s foot. This incident went unreviewed by the officials behind the screens, sparking outrage and calls of corruption from many.

The Lions captain Iker Muniain criticized the refs after the game. While the player did not mention Real Madrid in name, on can deduce he was referring to the club from the Spanish captain, stating that VAR favors some clubs. Bartomeu has now come out with comments of his own, echoing a similar sentiment.

"I watched San Mames match until almost the end of the second half," the Barcelona president said after their weekend win over Villarreal.

"I feel bad because we have the best league in the world and VAR after coronavirus isn't fair. It has changed some results and always favors the same team."

And as was the case with Muniain, while the under-fire Blaugrana executive did not mention Real Madrid in name, the Camp Nou official was obviously referring to Los Blancos. Zidane has publicly slammed this rhetoric which has grown in popularity. The RFEF's Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) has now issued a statement regarding this controversy, denying all allegations regarding bias towards the 13-time Champions League winners.

As per Marca, the CTA stated that both referee Jose Gonzalez Gonzalez and the man in charge of the VAR, Jesus Gil Manzano, did a perfect job in the clash between Athletic Club and Real Madrid. Regarding Muniain and Bartomeu, both men could face fines of up to €18,000. Regardless, this will do little to end the “Video Assistant for Real Madrid” narrative.
