The USWNT attacker was almost unplayable as his side opened their Challenge Cup account with victory over Chicago Red Stars.

Rose Lavelle served up a lot for the highlights reel by delivering a sensational performance in Washington Spirit's NWSL Challenge Cup opener against Chicago Red Stars on Saturday. The 25 year-old USWNT star grabbed the Woman of the Match award by getting on the scoresheet as her side secured a 2-1 victory.

The most notable moment of the World Cup winner's involvement ensued when she started and finished off the move for Spirit's opener in the eighth minute. Armed with the ball from the half-way line, the former Boston Breakers' star accelerated into the opponent's penalty box and served up a pass for Ashley Hatch to convert.

However, the latter had her direct shot saved by Chicago’s Alyssa Naeher, the USWNT's World Cup goalkeeper. The loose ball was then smashed into the top corner after falling into the path of Lavelle. 

A quick restart in the second half saw Washington Spirit doubling their lead after just 20 seconds. A a rare mistake by Naeher allowed Ashley Hatch to redeem herself by tapping the ball into an empty net. Five minutes later, Morgan Gautrat subsequently pulled a goal back for Chicago with a low-drive from about 13 yards out.
