Third-placed Inter will hope to try to close the gap on top two sides Lazio and Juventus as they welcome bogey side Sassuolo on Wednesday, June 24.

Preview: Inter vs Sassuolo

With the Nerazzurri failing to progress in the Coppa Italia after losing in the semi-finals to eventual champions Napoli, there are theoretically two trophies left in store for Antonio Conte in his debut season: the Scudetto and the Europa League. Currently, Inter are nine points behind Juventus, despite having initially reduced the gap after playing their game in hand last weekend, and will be looking to further close that distance with a win against Sassuolo on Wednesday.

As for Sassuolo, they come into this game having lost 4-1 to Atalanta. Despite that, the Neroverdi have proven to be a pesky opponent for many of Serie A's bigger teams, and Inter are no exception to that. Notably, the visitors picked up a draw at this same ground last term, and haven't lost at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza since being humiliated 7-0 back in September 2014.

Inter's win over Sampdoria in their make-up fixture was significant as it ended as two-game losing streak for Conte's side and ensured that the former Juve boss avoided losing three in a row - something that has rarely happened during his managerial career. Moreover, it means that the Nerazzurri aren't totally out of the title race. Second-placed Lazio face a tricky away clash to an Atalanta side who are having another strong season, and so Inter will want to make sure they can pick up a win over a disappointed Sassuolo team who despite their efforts, still came up with nothing to show for it in their heavy defeat to Atalanta.

With the exception of Lazio, who have lost just two Serie A games so far this season, no other team have lost fewer games than the Nerazzurri, who are joint tied for three defeats. The Bianconeri have already won their round 27 match, picking up a comprehensive 2-0 victory over a Bologna side who have started sliding down the table, and so a win here would restore the six point margin between themselves and Juventus, who still have yet to fully fire on all cylinders since the league returned to action a few weeks ago.

However, Sassuolo truly are a pain for Inter and have become a bogey side for the Milan giants over the years. Although they were humiliated at this ground in 2014, the Neroverdi still have managed to somehow enjoy the superior head-to-head record against the Nerazzurri, with seven wins from their 13 prior meetings. That also includes three wins and a draw at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza from six prior matches.
