Preview – Brighton vs Arsenal

A team fighting to remain in the Premier League will face a side struggling to keep their European hopes alive. This is the summary of Brighton vs Arsenal, the second-earliest Saturday kick-off in the English top-flight. The Seagulls will be hosting the Gunners on Matchday 30 of the world's most popular after the competition made its much-awaited return on Wednesday with the two games in-hand.

Neither side can afford to lose this tie. In the case of 15th-placed Brighton, they sit a mere two points above 18th-placed Bournemouth, who face Crystal Palace over the weekend. Should the Cherries beat the Eagles and the Seagulls stumble against Arsenal, then these two sides will trade spots, with Graham Potter's men likely to drop into the danger zone if the likes of West Ham and Watford record favorable results.

On the flip side, Arsenal's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League diminished on Wednesday after their 3-0 defeat to Man City brutally reminded fans of the state the north London giants are in. Improvements have occurred under Mikel Arteta, but his side are far off from being a top side ready to challenge the likes of the Citizens and soon-to-be champions Liverpool.

It should be noted that Arsenal's objective this season is not to challenge those sides but to compete with Chelsea, Man Utd, Wolves, Sheffield, and Tottenham for a spot in Europe. The ideal goal is to make the top four and while the fourth-placed Blues are only eight points, Aubameyang and Co. should little on Wednesday to prove they can overturn that deficit within the nine remaining rounds. Given Man City's Champions League ban, which could be upheld in time to prevent them from making the 2020/21 season, fifth place could earn a team a ticket to UEFA's premier club competition. However, the Gunners will have to prove this Saturday that they got what it takes to grab that spot ahead of Spurs, the Blades, the Wanderers, and the Red Devils.

Team news

Brighton: Fortunately for the home side, their only absentee for this game is Jose Izquierdo who has been sentenced to a long layoff due to a knee issue. Aaron Connolly, meanwhile, could make an app after undergoing a knee surgery during the break.

Arsenal: Arteta's side are in trouble and short of options in defense. Pablo Mari, having picked up a serious ankle injury in the 3-0 loss to Man City. David Luiz, on the other hand, is suspended after getting sent off in that Etihad Stadium visit and is thus unavailable this weekend. The Gunners' other defensive options Sokratis Papastathopoulos (thigh), Cedric Soares (nose), and Calum Chambers (knee) are all currently sidelined while Lucas Torreira, a man with the defensive attributes to deputize amid this crisis, is suffering from an ankle issue. Xhaka, the first of two Arsenal players to pick up a knock in the Citizens defeat, will also sit out this tie.
