Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has come under scrutiny for the role he played in Tottenham Hotspur's first goal in Friday's Premier League encounter. The 29-year-old goalie failed to keep the score level ahead of the first half break, letting a strike for Spurs, Steven Bergwijn to slip through his fingers for the game's opener.
Manchester United's expectation for their first game following the restart of the season was met with a blip with the Old Trafford outfit coming short in the early minutes if their trip to the Tottenham Stadium. Despite dictating and dominating play for the better part of the proceeding, the visitors had all their hard work undone by one quick attacking move by Spurs.
A poorly headed pass from Luke Shaw intended for Marcus Rashford fell in the path of Steven Bergwijn around the half-way line. The Dutchman with an electrifying pace, beat a host of Red shirts before smashing the ball home in a 1v1 with David de Gea. Watch the goal below:

Fans on social media have subsequently been unforgiving towards De Gea, with many suggesting that the Spaniard could have done better in keeping the ball out. So far, the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper has conceded six goals from the last nine shots he has faced.
United legend Roy Keane shared the sentiments of the Red Devils fans, stating that the keeper was overrated.

Here are some fan reactions:
It's about time everyone accepts that David De Gea isn't a top goalkeeper any more. A few years ago he was arguably the best in the world, and comfortably Man Utd's best player. In the past 18-24 months he's been absolutely awful. Too many basic mistakes to keep count of.

De Gea had hand sanitizer on his gloves.

I don't know how many more slow-mo replays of De Gea shaking his head at himself I have in me.

De Gea hasn't been the same since 2018 World Cup.
