Preview: Man City vs Arsenal
The Premier League returns on Wednesday with two interesting fixtures, with the second of June 17's two match-ups being Man City vs Arsenal. The reigning champions – until Liverpool officially get their hands on the title, that is – will be hosting the Gunners in what should be a thrilling showdown.
This tie is made all the more interesting due to what's at stake for the north London giants. Arteta's men are in the midst of a heated top-four race, one that they remain in by the skin of their teeth. Aubameyang and Co. currently sit in ninth and while this is a game in-hand, meaning that they could jump to seventh in time for Matchday 30, backing them to beat Guardiola's side isn't the safer bet.
This game will bring an end to the 100-day wait for the Premier League. As a result, it will be interesting to see the fitness levels of both teams. While Arsenal have a lot left to play for in the 2019/20 English top-flight campaign, the same can't be said about Man City. The Citizens are guaranteed to finish in the top four but the title race is out of reach, with Liverpool boasting a 25-point lead at the top and in need of only two wins in order to officially be declared the champions.
Instead, De Bruyne and Co. remain in the race to win the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, having already lifted the Carabao Cup title. As a result, some speculate whether Guardiola's men will lack the hunger to beat Arsenal. Only time will tell if this is true.
Team news
Man City: The break has treated Man City well as it allowed the likes of Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane to recover from their long-term injuries and return for the 2019/20 season. It remains unknown whether the two will start but that appears unlikely given that they will probably be lacking match fitness.
Arsenal: Calum Chambers remains injured for Arsenal. However, Arteta has been boosted by the return of Kieran Tierney and Cedric Soares – the latter will be wearing a mask due to a facial injury. Question marks hover above Lucas Torreira.
