Bundesliga: Union Berlin scores direct free-kick goal for the first time in 54 years [Video]

It has taken Robert Schroder's team 28 matches to score directly from a dead-ball situation for the first time.

While scoring free-kicks may be a usual sight to most European clubs in top leagues, it surprisingly isn't to others. One such case emerged on Wednesday night, with Marcus Ingvartsen etching his name in Union Berlin's history books with a sublime finish from a dead-ball against Mainz.

After losing four and drawing once in their last five Bundesliga matches, Robert Schroder's men started the Matchday 28 home encounter on the backfoot. A goal by the visitors' Ridle Baku in the 13th-minute momentarily demoted the Berlin side to 15th on the league table and within three points of the relegation zone.

Nevertheless, the lead could not stand the test of time and the series of attacks initiated by Union afterward. 12 minutes to the end of the first half, the hosts won a free-kick a little outside the penalty area of Mainz. This was expertly dispatched by Marcus Ingvartsen into the bottom-left corner. Watch:

Essentially, after 54 years of being in existence and 28 matches played in the Bundesliga following their promotion in 2019, the Danish attacker became the first player in history to score from a direct free-kick for Union Berlin. The goal which secured the 1-1 draw for the Schroder's side also placed them in 13th position with 31 points - four points clear of the drop.
