The European football governing body is looking to shorten the postponement of this summer's tournament.

UEFA is considering the prospect of shortening the postponement of Euro 2020 to December rather than next summer, a report by The Telegraph newspaper has revealed. The rapid rise in coronavirus cases has caused sporting activities including football to be put on hold all over the world but initial claims which suggested that the European nations tournament might be delayed could prove to be false.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organisation declared the coronavirus as a pandemic and a ince then, there have been cases of players testing positive for the virus. As part of measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19, all football fixtures across Europe's top leagues were also scrapped.

In a broader scope, the suspension of club football has had a huge impact on other major international tournaments and one such is Euro 2020. According to earlier reports, the outbreak of the virus could see the competition whose commencement was slated for June 12, being delayed until the summer of 2021. However, the Telegraph has enough reason to believe that an earlier date could be fixed in the coming days.

Per the English publication's narrative, "radical proposals" which include the aforementioned will be debated on when 55 member states, representatives of Players' Associations and other stakeholders meet to address the coronavirus crisis at a summit on Tuesday.

While the arrangement will prevent the men's tournament from getting in the way of the women's competition in 2021, it is believed that it would also allow the Premier League and other club competitions to catch up this summer. It would also provide the avenue for nations to prepare for the 2022 World Cup in  Qatar. For the first time in the history of the tournament it will be played in the winter season.
