CONCACAF Champions League - Round of 16 preview

CONCACAF Champions League - Round of 16 preview, first leg

February 18, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
The most important club competition in CONCACAF kicks off on Tuesday. Here's how the first legs of each tie will be played.

The 2020 CONCACAF Champions League will kick off this evening with a host of interesting games taking place in North America.

Liga MX teams have dominated the competition since 2005, but this time, MLS clubs seem to be capable of ending that dominance. Los Angeles FC, Atlante United, New York City FC and MLS champions Seattle Sounders will embark in that adventure.

Four Liga MX teams will try to keep Mexico's dominance in the tournament. América and Tigres have been two of the most consistent teams in the past decade, while León is one of the most exciting teams to watch in the Mexican top-flight. Meanwhile, Cruz Azul will try to put their shaky past behind them to give their fans something to smile about. Current CCL winners, Monterrey, will not be around to defend their title.

There are other teams involved in this tournament that could also make things hard for Mexican sides. Costa Rica's most winning team, Saprissa, was the last team outside of the Mexican top-flight to win this title, and they will try to do the same here. Honduras-based clubs Olimpia and Motagua are also two teams that could be considered as potential "dark horses".

This is how all of the first legs of the competition will be played this week.

Tuesday, February 18

Portmore United (JAM) vs Cruz Azul (MEX) - The only team from the Caribbean will lock horns against the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League winners.

León (MEX) vs Los Angeles FC (MLS) - The 2019 MLS Supporters' Shield champions are seen as one of the biggest threats to end Liga MX's dominance in this competition, and what better way to prove their chances than facing León, the 2019 Clausura tournament runners-up.

Motagua (HON) vs Atlanta United (MLS) - Frank De Boer's men enter their second CCL, and facing Motagua will test their chances of winning the competition. All bets could be off due to the harsh environment the North American side will encounter in their visit to Honduras.

Wednesday, February 19

Alianza (SLV) vs Tigres UANL (MEX) - The 2019 CCL runners-up shouldn't have any problems to beat the El Salvador side...if they had all of their top guns around. Coach Ricardo Ferretti has already stated that Tigres will face the Central America club without six key players, which could give Los Paquidermos a fighting chance.

Deportivo Saprissa (CRC) vs Montreal Impact (CAN-MLS) - The 2019 CONCACAF League champions are set to lock horns against the 2014-15 CCL runners-up. This is the tie where there is no clear favorite, so we strongly suggest you to keep an eye on this clash.

Comunicaciones (GUA) vs América (MEX) - The Guatemalan side barely made it to this competition, and after a few years away from the international spotlight, they will try to test the most winning side in CONCACAF Champions League history, led by Miguel Herrera and El Tri legend Guillermo Ochoa.

Thursday, February 20

San Carlos (CRC) vs New York City FC (MLS) - Both teams will be making their debut in this competition, and even if the North American side seems to have an edge over their Costa Rican counterparts, the chance to leave a lasting impression in this competition might be enough motivation to see these teams fight until the end.

Olimpia (HON) vs Seattle Sounders (MLS) - Los Leones don't seem like a major threat for the 2019 MLS Champions, even if they have a history in this competition. The Sounders will try to at least repeat their performance from 2013, when they reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
