USWNT road to Tokyo 2020

USWNT's Olympic Women's Football warm-up matches vs Australia, Brazil

February 13, 2020 By Juan Aguerrevere
The United States Women’s National Team aims to keep adding wins to its 18-game streak before Tokyo 2020. But in order to keep that win streak alive, the U.S. will need to be flawless in the SheBelieves Cup and upcoming high-profile friendlies ahead of the Olympic Games.

U.S. Soccer and the Football Federation Australia announced home and away fixtures between their two national teams in 2020 and 2021.

The Westfield Matildas will travel to Utah on April 10, 2020, to take on the Stars and Stripes at the Rio Tinto Stadium – home of the Real Salt Lake – in Sandy, Utah. As for the second fixture, it will take place in Australia in November 2021. More information about the second leg is due course.

After playing Australia, the Americans will travel to Northern California to face Brazil at the Earthquake Stadium – home of the San Jose Earthquakes – on April 14.

The USA is expected to play four more friendlies across June and July with those games to be announced in the future.

Road to Japan

Qualifying to Tokyo 2020 was the first step that Vlatko Andonovski's USA team took to complete their ultimate goal in 2020, reclaim gold at the Olympic Games. Step two will be The SheBelieves. And step three are the upcoming friendlies.

The World Champions will face the No. 7 nation in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, Australia.

The last time these two sides met was in the buildup to the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup on April 4. As expected, the two national teams produced a blockbuster match where the USWNT came on top, 5-3.

Holding a 28-1-1 record, the Americans tower over the Australians. However, the last three matches between these two giants have ended in a win for each and a tie.

The Stars and Stripes also met the 'la Verde-Amarela' in the leadup to France 2019. The match was tight as the U.S. was able to win by minimal difference, 1-0.

The USWNT all-time record against Brazil sits at 34 wins, three losses and five draws in favor of the North Americans. The Americans have won four straight games against the Brazilians, but prior to that run, Brazil had won three in a row.

Who will the USWNT play against in the four unnanounced matches?

If we take a look back at the USWNT preparations for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2019, we can probably have a better idea of who the Americans will face in the unannounced matches.

The USA played preparation friendlies against Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, Mexico and South Africa before France 2019.

Each one of those teams belongs to a different confederation - Australia (AFC), Belgium (UEFA), New Zealand (OFC), Mexico (CONCACAF) and South Africa (CAF). This means that the U.S. is not necessarily looking to square off against the toughest teams, but is more keen to face a mix of teams from around the world.

Expect the U.S. to play a tough European side, most likely a top-10 FIFA/Coca-Cola Ranking team, and three teams from three other continents.
