CWOQ USWNT vs Haiti preview

Concacaf Women's Olympic Qualifying USWNT vs Haiti on Jan. 28: Match preview, kick-off time, and broadcast listings

January 28, 2020 By Juan Aguerrevere
This match preview will inform you on where and how to watch the USWNT take on Haiti along with team statistics and a head-to-head analysis.

The United States Women's National Team is back for its fifth Concacaf Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship with one goal in mind. To win it.

The Stars and Striped have never lost an Olympic qualifying tournament before winning the last four. In 2004, the U.S. faced Mexico in the finals of the first edition of this competition and won 3-2. The Americans asserted their dominance in the following three tournaments defeating Canada in each final. However, the Americans are in the process of avenging their result in the 2016 Olympics where they failed to win an Olympic medal for the first time ever. Another CWOQ win would be the first step for the USWNT to reach gold in Tokyo.

As for Haiti, the Caribbean nation make headway into this tournament with an incredible result against Canada on January 20, where Les Grenadières managed to draw the match one-all. This incredible feat is a much-needed deep breath filled with fresh air given the competition that Haiti will face in Group A. Haiti is the lowest-ranked team in the group in terms of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking sitting at number 68 while the U.S. sits in first, Costa Rica in 37 and Panama in 53. Wins over Suriname and Puerto Rico in October 2019 were enough to qualify the Haitians to this Olympic qualifier.

Head-to-head

The USA has faced Haiti six different times and it is no surprise that all six matches were won by the Americans. Here is what is incredible about the history between these two Concacaf nations. The Haitians have never found the back of the net against the Americans. The USWMT has scored 42 goals over those six matches.

The Haitians can make the best out of this completely one-sided affair. One goal against the U.S. would mean the world and a step forward for the Caribbean nation.

Players to watch

Carli Lloyd – USWNT

Carli Lloyd is set to lead Vlatko Andonovski's side having the most Olympic qualifying experience out of all her teammates. The 37-year-old forward has scored 12 goals in the CWOQ and is at the brink of drawing level and potentially surpassing Abby Wambach's 14-goal team record in the tournament. To make matters even more interesting, Lloyd has scored two hattricks in her last two meetings with Haiti. Having won gold medals in 2008 and 2012, the New Jersey native is looking to carry her team to not just another CWOQ win, but to redeem themselves in Tokyo 2020 after a medal-less Brazil 2016.

Nerilia Mondesir – Haiti

Haiti possesses some of Concacaf's best young talent, but we'll be focusing on forward Nerilia Mondesir for the 'players to watch' segment.

Mondesir, also known as Nerigol, earned her nickname for obvious reasons. Mondesir caught national attention in 2014 when she debuted for Haiti's national team at the age of 15. She has accumulated 45 goals in 30 matches over her six years playing for Haiti's different age groups. In 2017, just at the age of 18, Montpellier found value on the Haitian and shipped her across the Atlantic where she has made 20 appearances in Division 1 Feminine.

Broadcast information

The Americans will face Haiti in home ground, the BBVA Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET time. Here is how you can watch it:
