Liverpool makes Premier League history with Manchester United win

January 19, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Reds entered the English top-flight league's history books with a remarkable win in Sunday's encounter.

Liverpool is closing in on Arsenal's 'Invincibles' record and the image has never been vivid. A strong display against Manchester United on Sunday sent the Reds 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

A first half goal by Virgil van Dijk was enough to put Jurgen Klopp's side in cruise control before Mohamed Salah finished off a sumptuous assist from Alison Becker to ultimately dash the hopes of the Red Devils who staged a last-ditch fight to potentially salvage a point at Anfield. Indeed, a series of milestones were attained as a result, with the game's outcome affirming the narrative that the Reds may be ending their 30-year drought without a Premier League trophy come the end of the season.

Below are some of the records tabled by Jurgen Klopp's men after winning 21 of their 22 Premier League fixtures this season:

  • Liverpool currently hold the best record in Europe's top five leagues after 22 matches. The Reds' 21 wins from 22 games surpasses the feat achieved by both Bayern Munich and Manchester City in 2013/2014 and 2017/2018 respectively where the pair won 20 and drew two matches apiece.

  • Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League home streak now stands at an 51 games. It includes the Reds winning the last 18.

  • Liverpool also boast a perfect home Premier League record (11 wins). They have led at half-time in all but one home match this season.

  • Liverpool is the first club for over a decade to keep seven successive Premier League clean sheets. The feat is only bettered by Manchester United's Premier League record 14 successive games without conceding from November 2008 to February 2009.
