Rocky Rodriguez, Cruz ahead of Olympic Qualifiers

Raquel “Rocky” Rodriguez & Shirley Cruz hope to lead Costa Rica to its first-ever Olympics appearance

January 18, 2020 By Juan Aguerrevere
Costa Rica has never reached the Olympic Games, but Raquel “Rocky” Rodriguez and captain Shirley Cruz are looking to change history in the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Head Coach Amelia Valverde has laid out her 20-player roster that will go head to head with Haiti, Panama and the United States in Group A of the Concacaf Olympic Qualifiers.

Las Ticas’ last match was against the USWNT in November 2019 where they fell 6-0. Nevertheless, they looked composed in defense and were able to get up the pitch and hit posts on different occasions.

Rocky Rodriguez was acquired by the Portland Thorns from Sky Blue FC for Margaret Purce and a 2021 first-round draft pick. Rodriguez, 26, was the second overall pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft after being awarded the MAC Hermann Trophy for being the best female collegiate soccer player in the United States with Penn State.

On the other hand, Cruz, 34, is the sole leader of this team representing her nation 78 times scoring 24 goals. The midfielder has played most of her senior career oversees with French giants Lyon and PSG where she reached over 200 caps in 13 years. This will be one of her last chances to spearhead her nation to a major tournament.
