Xavi reveals reasons why he snubbed Barcelona

Xavi reveals reason for snubbing Barcelona's coaching gig

January 16, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
The former Blaugrana legend had the chance to become the team's new boss, but he chose to step down from the race to replace Valverde.

After all that was said to have happened last week between Barcelona and Xavi Hernández, the former midfielder came clean in a press conference about all negotiations between him and his former club to replace Ernesto Valverde.

Xavi's words confirm that Eric Abidal and Oscar Grau were in charge of all dealings on behalf of president Josep María Bartomeu, but ultimately, he decided to turn down the offer.

"Abidal and Grau came to me with an offer to coach Barcelona. I turned it down because it felt a bit rushed. It is still my dream to coach Barcelona one day, but it's a bit soon for me to take such a big step," Hernández stated in a press conference.

The former midfielder admitted that being on Barcelona's radar got to him and even forced him to lose focus on his current coaching gig.

"It gets to you, but now I'm only thinking about what I have to do here," the 2010 World Cup winner with Spain stated.

Before the interview concluded, Xavi shared his thoughts on Quique Setién's appointment as Barcelona's new coach.

"I wish him well. I was happy to learn that Setién got Barcelona's coaching spot. I like his work methods, he's the right fit for the team," Xavi concluded.
