The striker risk being out for longer than initially expected.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has cast doubt over the potential return of injured star Harry Kane and insists that the player could even be out until next season.

The 26-year-old English striker underwent surgery on a hamstring injury on Saturday having ruptured a tendon against Southampton on New Year's Day. A subsequent statement by Spurs revealed that he is expected to be out of action for some time with his recovery timeline slated for somewhere in April 2020.

Although Kane has a reputation of recovering from injuries before his stipulated return date, things look out of sorts now that his manager has suggested a different scenario. Ahead of Tottenham's FA Cup replay with Middlesbrough on Tuesday, Jose Mourinho suggested he could potentially miss the European Championships this summer.

"News on Harry we don't have and if you ask me every time we come here the answer will be the same," Mourinho told a news conference.

"We expect him to be out until, I don't know, mid-April, end of April, May, next season I don't know.

"I have no updates to give on Harry."

Just as it has been the case for Spurs in recent years, Harry Kane ranks as the club's highest goalscorer in the Premier League this season. The English striker has registered 11 goals in 20 appearances and, certainly, his absence could spell more trouble for the White Lilies who are yet to hit a consistent winning run under new manager Jose Mourinho.

In a broader scope, Kane remains central to the plans of England manager Gareth Southgate ahead of this summer Euro 2020 and with the tournament starting on June 12, the Three Lions manager will hope that he recovers on time.
