England starlet Danny Welbeck, who is of Ghanaian origins, will make his senior team debut against Ghana tonight. Will this coincidence transform into a nightmare for the striker?
Following the withdrawal of Spurs’ Aaron Lennon from England’s squad due to a hamstring injury, Danny Welbeck has been called up to fill the hole created. The young forward is fresh from scoring against Denmark last Thursday for England’s U-21 team.

Danny Welbeck has already angered Ghanaian fans through a few comments which he made concerning the prospect of representing the Black Stars. Welbeck, who has played for England at different youth levels, was quoted as saying by Ghanasoccernet recently:

“My mum and dad are from Ghana, so I’m eligible to play for both countries. I spoke briefly to a guy from the Ghana FA when he came to a Sunderland game to watch John Mensah, Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari.

“But that’s all it is. The other lads have been going on about it, but I'm very proud to wear the England shirt.”

Danny Welbeck has also received the backing of Sunderland coach Steve Bruce who described the England call-up as “a great opportunity for the kid to show what he is all about”.

Danny Welbeck has followed Ghanaian-born Mario Balotelli’s decision of snubbing Ghana’s Black Stars. But will he manage to avoid falling in the same circumstances as ‘Super Mario’?

For now, at least, Mario Balotelli may look at the 2010 FIFA World Cup with great regret as the Black Stars successfully proved that he was not needed in their team. Ghana reached the quarter-finals and almost qualified for the semis whereas Italy awfully crashed out from the tournament in the first round. Balotelli, meanwhile, was snubbed by then-Italy coach Marcello Lippi.

Tonight, Danny Welbeck will be out to prove that he’s made the perfect decision concerning his international career, whereas Ghana stand the chance of becoming the first African team to ever defeat England at the Wembley stadium.
