Klopp beats Man Utd in race to sign Salzburg ace

Liverpool beats Manchester United in race to sign highly-rated Salzburg star

December 12, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
The current Premier League leaders worked on this deal for the past six weeks. The player will join the UCL champions after completing a medical.

Liverpool is not ready to let the Premier league title slip off their hands, and with that in mind, the Reds have secured a transfer that is set to add depth to their team for the next six months.

After showing interest in signing RB Salzburg's Erling Haaland, the Reds decided not to pursue the signing of the 19-year-old star. Instead, Klopp and Co. decided to shift their focus to sign 24-year-old Takumi Minamino.

The Japanese footballer had been on Liverpool's radar for the past two years, and his performance precisely against the Reds in the recently concluded group stage of the UEFA Champions League confirmed all reports and made him a priority signing for Klopp's men.

During the game that ended with a 4-3 score for Liverpool, Minamino scored one of Salzburg's three goals and handed out one assist. The Asian footballer would finish the group stage with two goals and three assists, but he was not able to lead the Austrian side to the next round. Nevertheless, Minamino earned praise from fans and experts, and he will now seal the deal with the EPL leaders after completing a medical.

The footballer, who was also followed closely by Manchester United, had agreed to extend his contract with the Austrian outfit until 2021, but he was careful enough to include a low buyout clause in case a club came knocking on his door. Now, it will be up to Minamino to prove his worth in one of the most competitive leagues in the world, just like he did for Salzburg in his short-lived experience in the UEFA Champions League this season.
