The Blaugrana will host the German giants but will have a selection headache in defense. Check out our match preview for more info.

What is the form of Barcelona compared to Dortmund?

Barcelona head into this game on the back of a three-game winning streak. This is nothing impressive for a club of Barcelona’s stature and the performances in those three victories weren’t great. Their last Champions League game saw them held to a goalless draw at home against Slavia Praha. However, despite all of this, the Blaugrana have failed to win only two of their last 12 games (D1, L1).

Dortmund, meanwhile, are winless in their last two games. The 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich was followed by a disappointing 3-3 draw with Paderborn. The German giants have won only five of their last 13 matches in all competitions (D6, L2).

Barcelona vs Dortmund head-to-head record

These two clubs do not have a rich rivalry, having faced off only two times before – one being the goalless draw at the Signal Iduna Park on Matchday 1. Their first showdown 1997 UEFA Super Cup, which the Catalan giants won 3-1.

Team news

Barcelona already had defensive frailties heading into this game and will now be without several key names for this tricky clash. Number one is Gerard Pique, who is suspended.

To make things worse, Clement Lenglet is a major doubt, meaning Valverde could be without his two first-choice center-backs. On top of that, Nelson Semedo and Jordi Alba are also sidelined for this game.

The likes of Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard could return to the starting eleven after two disappointing results in the Bundesliga. Jadon Sancho is also tipped to feature despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Preview

Neither of these two sides heads into this match with confidence. Dortmund have failed to win their last two games and that has seriously derailed their title hopes. Meanwhile, Barcelona continue to lack identity and cohesion, instead relying on individual brilliance to bail them out.

This was evident to see in the 2-1 win over Leganes. The Catalan giants scored from two set-pieces, which has been their go-to source for goals, to come back from a goal down and earn all three points. A similar display will likely get punished by Dortmund.

The biggest issue is that should Barcelona stumble, they could be staring at the humiliation that is a group-stage exit. A defeat at home, accompanied by a victory for Inter Milan against Slavia Praha, means that the Catalan giants would have to win at San Siro on Matchday 6 to ensure progression. This is a cookie Messi and Co. will not want to face.
