Copa Libertadores Final: All numbers between Flamengo and River ahead of historic clash

November 19, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
The Brazilian and Argentine sides have a long history in South American competitions that we need to consider before predicting a winner.

History has already given us a chance to witness crucial games between Flamengo and River Plate in South American tournaments, and Saturday's clash will be one of the most anticipated of all time.

These teams have faced each other twelve times, with this being the fifth Copa Libertadores clash between these Brazilian and Argentine sides. Let's see how things have gone down between Fla and Los Millonarios prior to Saturday's game.

Copa Libertadores games

Flamengo and River Plate have faced each other four times in Copa Libertadores matches, with two wins for the Brazilian side and two draws. The games won by Flamengo took place back in the 1982 edition, ending in a 4-2 win at home and a 3-0 victory at the Maracaná. The other two games took place in last year's edition, with a 2-2 draw in Brazil and a goalless tie in the game held at the Monumental.

Supercopa Sudamericana clashes

These teams met in two different KO ties in this competition, with the first one going River's way and the second one being won by the Brazilian side. The first tie took place in 1991, and the Argentine side eliminated Flamengo after an excruciating penalty shootout. The second KO tie took place in 1993, and this time, it was Flamengo who came out on top by beating River Plate after a penalty shootout.

Copa Mercosur matches

All four games that were played in this defunct tournament were held in the 2000 edition, two of them in the Group Stage, and two more in the KO rounds. River won three of those games, including both matches at the Maracaná, and one more at the Monumental with a 4-3 score in the semi-finals. The remaining match ended in a goalless draw.

Final balance

All in all, River Plate has claimed five wins against Flamengo, with the Brazilian side being on the winning end four times. Three games ended in draws, which makes us believe that if stats had a say, River Plate would have the upper hand for Saturday's title clash.
