Liverpool's injury fears heighten as five players withdraw from international duty

November 17, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Reds could be without a few key players for a number of upcoming crucial fixtures.

Fans of Liverpool will fear for the worst with the club's current injury list increasing during the international break. Up to five key players withdrew their services for their respective national teams and have already returned to Merseyside for treatment.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson and Andrew Robertson are the names listed among those who missed out on representing their nations in the ongoing qualifiers in Africa and Europe. With Liverpool set for a busy festive period with fixtures in the Premier League, Carabao Cup, Champions League and the Club World Cup all in the pipeline, the club will hope that these key individuals will make swift recoveries.

Salah was forced to withdraw from Egypt's games against Kenya and Comoros after aggravating an ankle injury he picked up in the clash with Leicester in last weekend's win over Manchester City. While the extent of the injury remains unknown, the forward recently shared a video indicating that he was making progress in his recuperation process.

Relatively, Virgil van Dijk - who featured in the Netherlands'0-0 draw with Northern Ireland on Saturday - withdrew from the squad ahead of Tuesday's clash with Estonia. According to the Dutch FA, the Oranje skipper's action was due to "personal reasons".

England pair Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson also terminated their stay with the Three Lions as a result of a knee injury and illness respectively. The duo returned to Melwood prior to their side's 4-0 win over Kosovo on Sunday.

For Andrew Robertson, he made himself unavailable for selection in Scotland's two remaining qualifier after revealing to that he has been carrying a niggling ankle injury for almost three weeks.
