Ronaldo sets new Portugal record in Luxembourg win

Cristiano Ronaldo sets new Portugal record in Luxembourg win

November 17, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Selecao skipper sealed another international milestone in Sunday's win.

The chase for 100 international goals in Portugal colors is on but before that, Cristiano Ronaldo has successfully registered a new record in what is his country's final game of 2019. Against Luxembourg on Sunday, the 34-year-old superstar took his goal tally in the year to 14, the most he has ever managed in a calendar-year for the reigning European champions.

Prior to the day's encounter in Luxembourg, the Juventus ace was on 98 goals and would have ultimately loved to clock a century of goals with a brace against Group B's last-but-one ranked side. However, things did not go according to the script with the first 45 minutes of the clash proving to be quite difficult. Still, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner and his teammates ended the half on top, thanks to a 39th minute goal by Bruno Fernandes.

Having been given a torrid time by the host fans who constantly sang the name of Lionel Messi throughout the proceeding, Cristiano Ronaldo finally had his moment of vindication with four minutes of regulation time left to play. The former Real Madrid star had the bare minimum to do as he simply had to tap home Diogo Jota's miskicked volley which managed to elude the goalkeeper.

In essence, Ronaldo took his tally in the last two international matches for Portugal to four, while keeping his record all-time goal tally for the Selecao to 99. At the moment, he is just 10 goals away from equaling Iran legend Ali Daei's world-record international goal tally of 109.

Meanwhile, Portugal's 2-0 win ensured their safe passage into Euro 2020 as winners of Group B of the qualifying phase.
