England captain John Terry has stated that the booing of their national anthem by the Welsh supporters inspired them to a 2-0 victory over Wales today.
England were given a hostile reception by the Welsh supporters ahead of kick-off as they booed the national anthem of England. However, John Terry has now admitted that the booing was probably the influential factor behind their important victory.

“It’s not nice [hearing the national anthem being booed],” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s our national anthem and we’re proud of it and when you’ve got a stadium booing it can have the reverse effect for them because it definitely gets you pumped.

“Naturally you’re pumped up for the game anyway but when you hear fans booing the national anthem it does give you an extra boost.”

England scored two goals in the first 15 minutes to seal a crucial victory but Terry wasn't surprised by England's early dominance over the Welsh.

“We set the tempo very early,” he continued.

“The manager in the dressing room was very passionate, we overpowered their fans and got two great early goals and silenced them after that. He stressed that in the week and we worked on it as well, in the first half we did it really well.

“In the second half the lads felt a little bit tired and they were unable to do that but we’re thankful to our very good start we was happy to keep the ball and frustrate them.”

Fabio Capello experimented with a new 4-3-3 formation that worked immensely in England's favour as they suffocated the Wales players during the early stages. Nonetheless, the England captain only had praises for the tactical master class by Capello.

“I think the new system was very positive,” he said.

“When the manager put it up today it was very positive, the attitude was to get at them and press them high up the pitch which we’ve done, and with Wayne [Rooney] and Ashley [Young], who I thought was very good today, we put a lot of pressure on and stopped them breaking out early.

“I think people could say we could have kicked on in the second half but the pitch wasn’t great I must say. It was dry and very long, but once again it all comes down to that first half performance which the manager wanted and we wanted, which we got so we walk away delighted with the win today.”
