The Premier League's defending champions travel to Anfield to take on last season's runners-up in a crunchy affair on Sunday afternoon.

Not many people would have believed it if it was revealed to them that both Man City and Liverpool will be worlds apart just under 10 games into the new season. Indeed, that would have been justified considering the standard both clubs have set for themselves in recent years. Last season, the two Premiership club went at each other's throats as they battled for supremacy in the English top flight league.

Eventually, Pep Guardiola and his brigade came out on top by the narrowest of margins. The development from a few months ago subtly gave us a glimpse of what to expect as far as this season is concerned. Boasting a packed roster with some of the world's finest talents, both Liverpool and City gave us the indication that this season will experience a similar, if not the same, domineering run they respectively embarked on. Needless to say, that has bee far from what the script has brought to light.

While Man City are maintaining a steady pace alongside other competitors in the echelons of the Premier League table, Liverpool are languishing in the middle with very little to show for. In candor, it is not for the lack of trying on the part of the Merseysiders as their misfortune and non-performance this season have been largely due to injuries. The consistency with which they have lost several starters for key games has made itself prevalent in the results that have followed.

On Sunday, Liverpool will grace the Anfield on the back of a three game winless run the Premier League. On the contrary, they performed admirably well in the Champions League fixtures switched between the league outings. They rank 11th on the table, having accumulated just 10 points from the eight matches played thus far - their worst-ever start to a new league season in a decade.

Every test with Man City is daunting and in the upcoming affair, Jurgen Klopp's men will hope to replicate the form that inspired them to tear Rangers apart in the mid-week's affair, scoring seven times and conceding just once in the mid-week.

For City, the upcoming affair presents the perfect opportunity to avenge the defeat suffered at the hands of Liverpool in the Community Shield ahead of the new campaign. Since that defeat, Pep Guardiola's men have been almost unplayable, putting together a 14-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

In the Premier League, the defending champions are yet to suffer defeat in any of their fixtures, having drawn twice and winning the remaining seven games played. They will approach the clash with Liverpool on the back of a disappointing 0-0 draw with Copenhagen away in Denmark. Prior to that, the Citizens defeated Southampton by four goals to nil to keep the pressure on Arsenal who sit at the top of the table. At the moment, 16 points separate Pep Guardioala's side and their new nemesis.

Team news: Who will be available or absent for Man City vs Liverpool?

There are numerous injury issues for both clubs. England trio Kyle Walker, John Stones and Kalvin Phillips are all absent through injury for Man City.
