The Quotes Ahead Of The Champions League Draw Ceremony

Let’s look back at quotes from a few players and coaches ahead of Friday’s draw. What are they expecting? What would they prefer to get? What would they prefer to avoid?

Rafael van der Vaart, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder

“I don’t really care about who we’ll meet in the next round as long as it’s not Barcelona. Their attacking style of play and their superb combination football could be a problem.”

Victor Valdes, Barcelona goalkeeper

“For me, it’s equal as to whoever we get drawn against.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid winger

“I’d prefer to meet Manchester United or Raul [with Schalke 04] in the next round, but not Barca. I don't want to face Barcelona, because they are the strongest team in the tournament.”

Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid coach

“I don’t have any preferences regarding our next opponent. However, I’d be happy to avoid Inter or Chelsea, because it is emotionally difficult to face your own people. If it must be, then let it be. We are professionals after all, but I wouldn't like that.”

Petr Cech, Chelsea goalkeeper

“If you want to win the Champions League, then you have to beat any team in any stage. So, I don’t mind who we get.”

Indeed, why would any team want to avoid the best - whom they describe as Barcelona? To be the best, you have to beat the best! That's what we say, but it's another thing altogether to do it. At this stage, almost everyone is thinking of protection. What will the UEFA Champions League draw bring? We are just 7 minutes away from it, as of now!

11:00am GMT, 12:00pm CET, 7:00am EST: AND THERE WE GO!

The 8 quarter-finalists again: Barcelona, Internazionale, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Schalke 04

Japan has been remembered in Gianni Infantino's speech because of the disaster that has hit the country lately.

11:05am GMT, 12:05pm CET, 7:05am EST:

The big screen at the House of European Football is showing a recap of how Europe's 8 best team made it to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

11:08am GMT, 12:08pm CET, 7:08am EST:

Gianni Infantino presents Gary Lineker to the audience. The big screen shows a short coverage of Lineker's achievement as a player. He will join Gianni Infantino for the draws. He is now on stage. A ROUND OF APPLAUDS FOR GARY LINEKER!

11:12am GMT, 12:12pm CET, 7:12am EST:

Gianni Infantino explains the procedures for the draw. Remember that the first team drawn for each tie will play its first match at home.

11:13am GMT, 12:13pm CET, 7:13am EST:

The first team to be drawn, by Gary Lineker is REAL MADRID! And they will face... TOTTENHAM HOTSPURS, the debutants!

11:14am GMT, 12:14pm CET, 7:14am EST:

And it's an all-English affair as CHELSEA WILL FACE MANCHESTER UNITED!

11:15am GMT, 12:15pm CET, 7:15am EST:

Now Barcelona, and it's... SHAKHTAR DONETSK! Interesting!

11:16am GMT, 12:16pm CET, 7:16am EST:

The last teams, obviously... Inter Milan and Schalke!

11:18am GMT, 12:18pm CET, 7:18am EST:

MORE INTERESTING: The winners of Chelsea vs Manchester United will meet the winners of Internazionale vs Schalke 04 in the semi-finals

The winners of Real Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur will meet the winners of Barcelona vs Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals, and WATCH OUT FOR EL CLASICO in the semis!

So as we briefly recap the outcome of the UEFA Champions League draw, here is what we can say:

Are the ties exciting? Surely, yes!

Inter vs Schalke 04: Internazionale may be the happiest by now. Of course, they won't attempt to underestimate Schalke 04. However, don't they have the necessary to hand the Germans a "routine" exit from the quarter-finals of the Champions League? Will their majestic victory against Bayern Munich in the Last 16 of the competition turn out to be Inter's last triumph? Schalke have reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League twice, and they failed twice. Is number 3 the lucky charm?

Barcelona vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Barcelona? They know that Shakhtar Donetsk are wild tigers you can't take for domitable pets. When they played the Ukrainians in the 2009 UEFA Super Cup, they needed extra-time football to claim victory. Over two legs, will Barcelona make a repeat of that? The Catalans, who are quarter-finals experts must be cautious of Shakhtar who have reached this stage of the competition for the first time ever in their history.

Real Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur: That should be pure excitment! Whereas Real Madrid are looking to emulate their past glories in the UEFA Champions League (after breaking their Last 16 curse at last!), Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to make more giant-killings. The English side has developed an anti-virus against Italian giants. But do they have what it takes to bring down the giants from Spain, Real Madrid? Curious to know how Jose Mourinho will fair on his return to London!

Chelsea vs Manchester United: We mean English business! The last time Manchester United played against an English team in the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League, everything turned out to be very successful for the Red Devils. They had no problem dismantling Arsenal (it was) in the semi-finals of the 2009 edition. But what tells us that the situation will be the same against Chelsea this season? What is clear is that Manchester United have huge worries to overcome at Stamford Bridge and Ferguson's recent claims after United's Premier League defeat away to Chelsea in March will only add more excitment to this match-up.

11:50am GMT, 12:50pm CET, 7:50am EST:

DON'T GO AWAY! The UEFA Europa League draw is just 10 minutes away now. We've had interesting results earlier on for the UEFA Champions League. What will the draw for the Europa League bring? No-one knows as of now.

12:02pm GMT, 13:02 CET, 8:02am EST:

Gianni Infantino is back again with us as the draw for the UEFA Europa League commences. The teams again:

FC Porto, Benfica, Sporting Braga, PSV, FC Twente, Dynamo Kyiv, Spartak Moskva, Villarreal. Three Portuguese teams, two Dutch teams, one from Ukraine, one from Russia and one from Spain.

12:04pm GMT, 13:04 CET, 8:04am EST:

The big screen at the House of European Football is featuring a coverage. It's a recap of how the 8 quarter-finalists made it through.

12:07pm GMT, 13:07 CET, 8:047am EST:

Gianni Infantino presents Ronnie Whelan, the ambassador for this year's UEFA Europa League final. Ronnie Whelan is a Liverpool legend who can look back at several great moments in his career. A ROUND OF APPLAUDS for Ronnie Whelan who has now appeared on stage!

12:11pm GMT, 13:11 CET, 8:11am EST:

Gianni Infantino explains how the UEFA Europa League draw will be made. Pretty much like the UEFA Champions League draw.

12:12pm GMT, 13:12CET, 8:12am EST:

And it's under way! The first team out is... FC PORTO, the favourites! And who will they meet? It's Spartak Moscow, another Russian team after defeating CSKA Moscow in the Last 16!

12:14pm GMT, 13:14 CET, 8:14am EST:

Next up: Benfica... No Portuguese affair! The Eagles will meet PSV from Holland!

12:15pm GMT, 13:15 CET, 8:15am EST:

Will Villarreal happy? The last Spanish team in the UEFA Europa League will meet... FC Twente! So obviously, no Ducth affair as well. The last match-up is Sporting Braga vs Dynamo Kyiv.

12:17pm GMT, 13:17 CET, 8:17am EST:

SEMI-FINALS MATCH-UP:

Semi-final 1: The winners of Sporting Braga vs Dynamo Kyiv will meet the winners of Benfica vs PSV.

Semi-final 2: The winners of FC Porto vs CSKA Moscow will meet the winners of Villarreal vs FC Twente.

12:18pm GMT, 13:18 CET, 8:18am EST:

FINAL MATCH-UP:

The winners of Semi-final 2 will meet the winners of Semi-final 1.

So the UEFA Europa League quarter-final stage will have no all-Portuguese or all-Dutch affair. Will the trio from Portugal remain in the tournament? Will the Dutch have other ideas on that? And what about Dynamo Kyiv, CSKA Moscow and Villarreal?
