The current MLS champions will face the most winning side in Liga MX history in one more battle between American and Mexican teams.

Tournaments featuring MLS clubs and Liga MX sides are becoming usual, but this competition between clubs that have won their respective leagues is something special. The 2019 Campeones Cup will try to fortify the bond between the two most powerful leagues in the CONCACAF region, with an exciting clash set to take place on Wednesday evening.

The second edition of this tournament will feature Atlanta United, winners of the 2018 MLS Cup, and América, Apertura 2018 champions in the Mexican top-flight and recent winners of the Campeón de Campeones tournament.

This will be the first time for both teams in this competition, since last year's edition featured Toronto FC (MLS) and Tigres (Liga MX). One year ago, the Mexican side lifted the title thanks to their 3-1 win.

Atlanta United, coached by Frank de Boer, gets to this game as the second best team in the MLS' Eastern Conference. The red and black side has lost nine of their 25 matches, with a goalscoring tally of 43 goals.

Striker Josef Martínez and Gonzalo Martínez are the team's most talented players. the Venezuelan striker recently set a new record for most consecutive games scoring at least one goal, while Gonzalo, better known as "Pity", has made quite an impact during his maiden season at the club, following his impressive Copa Libertadores win with River Plate in 2018.

On the other side of the pitch, América gets to this game in a transition of sorts. Las Águilas have lost many key players during the summer transfer window, and some others, such as Nico Castillo, have endured season-ending injuries. Nonetheless, América has found a way to keep themselves unbeaten in the dawn of the Apertura 2019 tournament, winning three out of their four games.

Following the exits of goalie Agustín Marchesín and Edson Álvarez, Guido Rodríguez and Giovani Dos Santos stand out as the best players in this multi-talented squad. Added to those names, the return of shot-stopper Guillermo Ochoa is something that fans are desperately waiting to witness, following his impressive stint in Europe.

This will be the first clash ever between Atlanta United and el Club América.
