Top stats from 2019/20 Premier League opening round as Man Utd 4-0 Chelsea sets records

August 12, 2019 By Ali M.
Lampard's first Premier League game as manager did not go well. Elsewhere, Man City went down in history in their West Ham win while Liverpool reached a few feats of their own.

The Premier League has officially returned! Fans eagerly awaiting the 2019/20 season were joyous to see the English top-flight kick-off on Friday and what a treat it was, with round one proving why it's the most entertaining league in the world.

Man City and Liverpool, who finished first and second last term, enjoyed huge wins in their opening game while Arsenal earned a slim 1-0 win at Newcastle. Tottenham, on the other hand, were made to sweat against newly-promoted Aston Villa, needing three second-half goals to come back from 1-0 down to win 3-1.

The most anticipated game of Matchday 1, however, was Man United vs Chelsea and that fixture did not disappoint. The Blues showed spark but the Red Devils marched to a 4-0 victory nonetheless. Here are the best stats from the first round of 2019/20.

Liverpool 4-1 Norwich - The feats set in the opening game

Except for the injury to Alisson, this was a perfect game for Liverpool. The opening strike came courtesy of an own goal from Norwich, this being only the second time in history that the opening goal of a season occurred this way.

Trent Alexander-Arnold also reached an incredible feat in the victory after setting up the fourth goal. He became the first player since Ozil in 2015 to record assists in five consecutive Premier League games and only the eighth in history.

Why West Ham 0-5 Man City went down in history

It was an amazing win for the defending champions. They scored five past a West Ham side expected to impress this season, with Sterling continuing his spectacular form by netting a hat-trick. However, this game went down in history as being the first Premier League tie to see a goal overturned by VAR after a Gabriel Jesus effort was chalked off after review, albeit controversially.

Jack Grealish's awful top-flight run continues

Aston Villa was impressive in the first half of their Premier League showdown with Tottenham. However, they conceded twice in the last five minutes of the game to lose 3-1. This means Jack Grealish is yet to enjoy an English top-flight victory in ages.

Man Utd 4-0 Chelsea – The records set in the Blues' heavy defeat

Despite starting out as the better side, Chelsea crumbled to a 4-0 loss in their first Premier League game under Frank Lampard. This result set several feats, one being a 54-year record for the Red Devils while the others made an embarrassing read for the Blues. Here are the stats:

  • Heaviest opening day defeat for Chelsea

  • Heaviest defeat in Lampard's managerial career and for a Blues boss making his debut

  • This won't last for long but Chelsea are in the bottom three for the first time since September 2000 after that defeat.

  • Largest victory for Man United over the London giants in over half a century, since March 1965 to be exact.
