South America football governing body CONMEBOL has handed Gabriel Jesus a two-month ban for his bad behavior in the 2019 Copa America final. The confederation revealed on Wednesday that the Brazilian striker has been fined $30,000 for his misdemeanor after being sent off prior to his side's 3-1 triumph over Peru.
The 22-year-old striker received his matching orders in the July 7 showdown after picking up a second booking with 20 minutes left to play. Dissatisfied with the decision, the Manchester City starlet protested the decision by gesticulating that the match's referee had been paid off by the opposing team to officiate in their favor. While heading for the dressing room, the Selecao striker also pushed tha VAR feed mounted on the sidelines to further express his frustration.
Upon review, CONMEBOL released a statement announcing its dissatisfaction by the player's behavior and has apportioned sanctions according. While Brazil and Gabriel Jesus could appeal the decision, the latter is likely to be amiss when Brazil takes on Colombia and Peru in an international friendly scheduled for September.
There is the tendency that the forward will be ineligible to feature in two extra games for the Selecao in October. Jesus, who has returned to Manchester City ahead of the upcoming season, starred in Sunday's Community Shield triumph over Liverpool. The striker replaced the injured Leroy Sane in the opening minutes and managed to score in the Citizens' 5-4 penalty shoot-out win.
