The hopes of seeing the Tottenham playmaker at Old Trafford appear to have ended.

With only two days remaining in the transfer window for English clubs, one team scrambling to secure signings are Man United. The Red Devils desire to recruit a quality midfielder is no surprise given the uncertainty surrounding Paul Pogba's future.

The latest name to be linked with the 20-time top-flight champions was Christian Eriksen. The Tottenham ace is a proven Premier League playmaker who has already declared his desire to leave Spurs and would be a perfect fit at Old Trafford. The rumors picked up pace on Tuesday but one day later, this pursuit has reportedly hit an abrupt end.

The Danish ace was said to have been eager to join Man United, but according to Sky Sports, the English heavyweights have ceased negotiations for the 27-year-old. The reason: the Red Devils believe he has eyes only for a move to Real Madrid.

Eriksen was heavily linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu at one point. However, it is believed that Zinedine Zidane is not interested in the former midfielder, with Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek being Los Blancos' first and second preferred targets respectively.

Despite this, the Tottenham star is believed to be holding out for a Real Madrid move. This is a problem for Solskjaer's side as they have ended their pursuit of Paulo Dybala and Bruno Fernandes.

This could also be problematic for Spurs as they have been linked with the aforementioned Argentine and Portuguese midfielders. Spurs have reportedly made a $78M bid for Dybala, which was accepted, and the sale of Eriksen could help them recoup that money.

Another worrying issue for the north London heavyweights is that their midfielder is entering the final year of his contract. This puts last season's Champions League runners-up in a corner as they might be forced to sell for a cut-price or risk losing him for nothing next summer.
