Liga MX Roundup - Goals, stats and more after Matchday 3 of the Apertura 2019 tournament

August 5, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
Santos is the only team with a flawless record, following their victory against Atlas.

The Apertura 2019 is in full motion, and some upsets and surprises have stolen all headlines after three weeks.

Santos needs to be considered among the title contenders, since they are still flawless after three games. The green and white team is closely followed by the surprising Querétaro team and an ever-consistent América. Tigres, Atlas and Pumas may have already lost a game, but their six points give them hope for what's next.

Saturday's games left a few talking points, with Querétaro, América and Monterrey grabbing crucial wins. Furthermore, Necaxa's 7-0 display against Veracruz made fans and experts worry about the Red Sharks' contribution to the league, since their pathetic display has embarrassed the city, with their owners doing absolutely nothing to turn things around after 29 games without a win.

Sunday's matches left historic moments for fans to relish. André-Pierre Gignac is now Tigres' all-time top scorer, which gives him a chance to join an elite list of foreign players to set foot on Mexican soil. Added to that, the recently-promoted Juárez collected their first win in Liga MX, which will surely give the team from the Northern border a cause for celebration.

Apertura 2019 tournament - Matchday 3 facts

  • André-Pierre Gignac became Tigres' all-time top scorer with his game-winning goal against Pumas. Gignac only needed 1293 days to reach the milestone.

  • Cruz Azul's had their worst start of a tournament since the Clausura 2016 season, when they similarly picked up 2 points in their first three games. They will try not to repeat the end of that campaign, since they were not able to make the playoffs then.

  • Veracruz has endured the three worst defeats in recent Liga MX history, following their 7-0 loss against Necaxa this weekend. The other two games where the Red Sharks were dismembered took place in the Apertura 2007 (8-0 vs Pumas) and Clausura 2019 (9-2 vs Pachuca).

  • Giovani Dos Santos ended a one-year drought without a goal with his goal on Saturday evening. The last time he found the back of the net was on July 30, 2018, during his time with the LA Galaxy.
