Santos, Pumas, and Atlas are surprisingly on top of the league, while Chivas also accomplished one surprise of their own against Tigres .

The Apertura 2019 is in full motion, and some upsets and surprises have stolen all headlines in the second week of action.

The first major upset comes when you look at the standings. When all experts talked about América, Monterrey, and Tigres as the favorites to win the title, the top three spots of the competition are currently owned by Santos, Pumas, and Atlas. Yes, there have only been two weeks played, but these surprises are always welcome. Particularily, Santos' display with six goals scored and none conceded is something to praise, but we will have to wait and see how they play away from home.

The game that was expected to be the best of the weekend turned out to be a flop, mainly due to some poor refereeing by Roberto García. The goalless draw between León and América was tarnished by some questionable calls by the ref, and even if you don't support any of these teams, experts admit that things should have been different if the ref had made the right calls -or put VAR technology to good use-.

Lat, but not least, Guadalajara got some breathing space with their two-nil win against Tigres. The team from the North side of Mexico was not able to get past Chivas' defense, and now they will have to stand up and defend striker André-Pierre Gignac for his altercation with Chivas' boss, Tomás Boy.

Apertura 2019 tournament - Matchday 2 facts

  • América and León had not drawn any of their matches for over 43 years. That streak came to an end last Saturday.

  • Tomás Boy has only won two games since he took over as Chivas' boss. The first one came last season (2-1 vs León), and the second one, on Sunday (2-0 vs Tigres). Simply put, Boy has defeated the league leader (León) and the defending champion (Tigres).

  • Tigres is currently experiencing a five-game streak without a win away from home, including playoff games.

  • Veracruz established a new record for the most consecutive games without a win. The Red Sharks have not been able to collect a win in their last 28 games, with only eight of those being draws.
