AFCON 2019: Cameroon sacks Seedorf and Kluivert

Cameroon sacks Seedorf and Kluivert after AFCON 2019 failure

July 16, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The pair have been shown the exit door following their uninspiring campaign at AFCON 2019.

Current holders of the Africa Cup of Nations trophy Cameroon have sacked head coach Clarence Seedorf and his deputy Patrick Kluivert. The pair were axed following the Indomitable Lions' premature exit from the ongoing tournament in Egypt.

Cameroon saw its title defense cut short following a 3-2 defeat to Nigeria in the Round of 16. The loss to the Super Eagles primarily meant that the Indomitable Lions left the competition with just a win in four matches. Having stated the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau, the five-time champions drew twice in succession against Ghana and Benin to finish as runners-up in Group F.

The uninspiring spell led to calls for the demotion of Seedorf and Kluivert by the Cameroon sports minister, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, who stated that the pair were not fit for the job. The Cameroon football federation subsequently moved to terminate  the four-year deal initially signed with the two ex-Dutch internationals.

"The failures and inadequacies of technical supervision, as well as his [Seedorf] inability to maintain discipline in the team, largely accounted for the failure of the Indomitable Lions at the 2019 Afcon, and these contradict the contract he signed," Kombi told Cameroon's CRTV on Monday as per Goal.

"In other words, the question of maintaining Mr Seedorf as the head of our national team is clearly on the table.

"It seems to me that a renewal of the technical staff, reforming of the senior national team and all other national categories are necessary.

"I have asked the President of Fecafoot to inform him, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the contract."

Seedorf and Kluivert were appointed in August 2018 and oversaw 12 matches while in-charge of the Indomitable Lions. They managed just four wins, drawing five and losing the remaining three matches.
