Ajax lines up unexpected De Ligt replacement

Ajax lines up unexpected replacement for De Ligt as Dutch defender nears exit

July 15, 2019 By Oscar Rojas
De Ligt seems to have agreed terms to leave the UEFA Champions League sensation, but the Eredivisie champions will not splash cash to fill that void.

Matthijs De Ligt seems to be edging closer to leave Ajax, and there have been several reports covering his potential transfer to Juventus or even Barcelona, but what about his replacement? Well, Ajax has finally shed light on who will fill the captain's void, and in true Ajax fashion, they have chosen to develop talent from abroad.

Reports from earlier today by Dutch and American media suggest that Ajax is closing in on signing Mexican starlet Edson Alvarez as De Ligt's replacement. The 21-year old defender is set to fill the captain's shoes after three years as one of the most promising Liga MX talents.

Alvarez made his debut during the Apertura 2016 tournament with Club América, the most winning team in the Mexican top flight.

The Mexican footballer has played over 15 games with Mexico's National Team, including all of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup matches that saw Mexico win their eighth title just one week ago. Alvarez can play as a center back, as a right back, or as a holding midfielder, where he has excelled for club and country.

Alvarez's arrival to Europe is expected to be announced in the upcoming days, especially if De Ligt's move to Juventus is confirmed soon. The deal between Ajax and Club America will be sealed for $19M, according to a report by Mexican newspaper Record.

If this deal takes place, Alvarez will become the first Mexican player to ever wear Ajax's jersey. In fact, the Dutch club was linked to another high-profile transfer involving a Mexican player back in January, when they came close to signing Diego Lainez, but Spanish club Real Betis signed the promising playmaker by outbidding the Dutch side.
