In the Round of 16, the three-time African champions eliminated holders Cameroon via a 3-2 scoreline in thrilling encounter before setting up a quarterfinal date with South Africa. Once again, Nigeria reigned supreme, securing a 2-1 win to setup a semifinal date with Algeria.

Nigeria has won seven of its last nine matches against Algeria. That withstanding, the Desert Foxes secured a 3-0 win in World Cup qualifiers back in November 2017, ending a 27-year winless streak against the Super Eagles.
