Sweden, meanwhile, won their first two group stage games against minnows Thailand and debutants Chile, but were no match for the USA, who beat them 2-0. Nonetheless, the Blågult rebounded well in the round of 16 to edge out Canada (1-0) and more important, managed to knock out no. 2-ranked Germany after a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the quarter-finals.
