Los Cafeteros lost on penalties to reigning champions Chile and will leave the tournament with an odd feat.

Colombia's Copa America campaign came to an abrupt end on Friday night. Los Cafeteros impressed in the group stage, picking up nine points out of a possible nine, but came up short in the quarter-finals.

Carlos Queiroz's side took on Chile in the last eight and would have made the semis had they beaten the reigning champions. However, despite starting off great, La Roja grew into the game and it didn't take long for Sanchez and Co. to dominate the affair.

In fact, Chile found the back of the net twice but on both occasions, their efforts were chalked off after an intervention from VAR. As a result, the game remained goalless through the 90 minutes, meaning the game had to be settled on penalties, as extra time will only be introduced in the final.

All but one of the ten players to take their spot kicks converted and that one  man to miss unfortunately happened to be Colombian. William Tesillo saw his effort go wide, leaving Alexis Sanchez to convert the winning penalty. This means Los Cafeteros bows out with an eye-catching of being eliminated despite not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament.

Chile, meanwhile, have progressed to the penultimate stage and will be keen on successfully defending their title for a second consecutive time. Either Uruguay or Peru will be their opponent in the semi-final and should they make it to the final, a showdown with Argentina or Brazil awaits.
