The former UEFA president was taken into custody by the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police.

Michel Platini's fall from grace has hit a new low as the former UEFA president has been arrested over the awarding of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to Qatar.

Four years have passed since the Frenchman was banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee but the legendary player faces fresh troubles. According to Mediapart (as per the Daily Mail), the 63-year-old has been taken into custody as part of an investigation into the decision to hand hosting rights to the Gulf nation.

That decision came back in December 2010 and it was almost immediately met with criticism, one of which being the unfriendly summer temperatures. The tournament is set to be held in winter as a solution but this did little to calm down the accusations of corruption in the voting.

Platini has thus been taken to the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF). The Ballon d'Or winner admitted to meeting fellow disgraced football official Mohamed Bin Hammam, which only added to the suspicions.

It is alleged that the then UEFA president met with the Qatar official 30 to 50 times. The Gulf nation was cleared of any wrongdoing in their bid to host the tournament after an internal investigation, but the former head of European football still faces accusations.

The man once tipped to succeed Sepp Blatter as the president of FIFA was banned from all football-related activities for four years. He denies any wrongdoing and continues to fight back against these claims.
