Preview: China vs Spain

Although China started off 2019 with back-to-back victories against Nigeria (3-0) and South Korea (1-0), things quickly went downhill for the Steel Roses. The 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup runners-up lost their next consecutive five matches, and started off this summer's tournament with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Germany. That marked the tenth time China have lost to the Germans, meaning that in ten meetings, they have never been able to get the better of the European giants.

However, the Steel Roses put themselves back into contention for a place in the round of 16 by grinding out a gritty 1-0 victory against debutants South Africa. Now, they will go toe-to-toe with Spain for runners-up in Group B, and that's exactly how most people had expected things would shape up in this quartet. Spain, for their part, had to come from a goal down versus Banyana Banyana to fight back to earn a 3-1 victory, but come into this game having lost 1-0 to Germany. After a strong qualifying campaign, they will be desperate to regain that some positive momentum in order to make sure they pip China to second and set themselves up for automatic qualification to the round of 16.

Team news: China vs Spain

  • China will be seeking their first ever win over Spain
  • This will be the third meeting between the two sides
  • So far, the Spainards lead the head-to-head record, with two wins (3-1 and 2-1)

Match facts: China vs Spain

China: No major injury or suspension concerns, so China will be able to field their strongest starting XI for this must-win match.

Spain: Likewise, Spain will naturally field their strongest line-up in order to try to pick up all three points.

Preview: South Africa vs. Germany

With zero points so far, it looks like it's game over for South Africa. The debutants did give themselves a glimmer of hope as they netted against Spain, thus shocking La Roja and held onto that lead for the entire first half and part of the second period. However, that decision of grabbing one goal and trying to hang on to a narrow 1-0 lead rather than going for a second to shut down Spain came back to haunt them, as unfortunately, the Spaniards came roaring back to net three goals sans reply and deal Banyana Banyana a bitter blow.

Losing 1-0 to China - the team certainly they thought they could have nicked points against - is even more deflating for Desiree Ellis's side, and now they face an unwanted showdown with none other than Germany. Although the Germans have been slow to get off the mark, they still have won their first two World Cup group stage games and have already booked their spot in the round of 16.

With that in mind, could the Germans take a more relaxed approach? Not likely. Although thanks to two 1-0 victories over China and Spain, Germany sit top of Group B, they certainly will want to make sure they finish their group stage campaign on a high note. That being said, even if Spain or China do win and Germany suffer a shock loss, die Nationalelf will still finish as group winners thanks to their superior head-to-head record over those two sides.

South Africa, who have failed to win their last six games, will certainly look at Germany's impeccable record with more than a slight glimmer of envy. For them, it's simple: Win or go home. With the odds heavily stacked against them, will they be able to pull off any kind of shock upset?

Team news: South Africa vs. Germany

South Africa: The debutants will be able to welcome defender Nothando Vilakazi back from suspension after she missed matchday two due to two yellow cards earned against Spain.

Germany: Given that die Nationalelf have already sealed their place in the round of 16, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg will likely rotate her squad for this fixture.
