The USWNT skipper missed a glorious chance to rewrite history.

The USWNT skipper Carli Lloyd would have to wait to make a bit of history at the FIFA Women's World Cup after missing a penalty against Chile. The 36-year-old was a kick away from becoming the first player to score two hat-tricks at the finals.

In what was a comfortable 3-0 win for the Stars and Stripes, Lloyd hit the ground running by opening the scoring inside the 11th minute. 15 minutes later, Lindsey Horan doubled the lead for Jill Ellis' side before her skipper grabbed her second 10 minutes before half-time.

A starring performance by Chile shot-stopper Christiane Endler denied US the opportunity to add to their tally in the second half, having managed to get 10 against Thailand in the previous game. However, the opportunity present itself after the defending champions were awarded a penalty by the help of the VAR.

A successful kick by Carli Lloyd would have made the USWNT's captain the first player in history to score two hat tricks at successive Women's World Cup finals but the Orlando Pride forward sent her effort wide. Watch:

The opportunity for Lloyd to secure the record will present itself when the USWNT takes on Sweden in the final Group game. That withstanding, the 2015 Golden Ball winner managed to leave her mark with the brace against Chile by becoming the third USWNT player to score 10 career World Cup goals.

She also became the first player to score in six straight FIFA Women's World Cup matches.
