2019 Copa America: Ecuador team profile

Ecuador team profile: 2019 Copa America key players, roster, coach, winning odds

June 1, 2019 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
La Tricolor will aim for qualification into the knock stage despite being surrounded by of the tournament's favorites.

Who are the players in Ecuador's 23-man squad for the 2019 Copa America?

Ecuador head coach Hernan Dario Gomez's roster is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Alexander Dominguez (Vélez Sarsfield), Pedro Ortiz (Dolphin), Maximo Banguera (Barcelona *Ecuador*)

Defenders: Arturo Mina (Yeni Malatyaspor), Roberto Arboleda (Sao Paulo FC), Pedro Pablo Velasco (Barcelona *Ecuador*), Cristian Ramirez (FK Krasnodar), Xavier Arreaga (Seattle Sounders), Jose Quintero (LDU Quito), Beder Caicedo (Barcelona *Ecuador), Gabriel Achilier (Morelia Monarchs)

Midfielders: Romario Ibarra (Minnesota United FC), Renato Ibarra (CF America), Carlos Gruezo (FC Dallas), Jefferson Intriago (LDU Quito), Antonio Valencia (Sheffield United), Ayrton Preciado (Santos Laguna), Jefferson Orejuela (LDU Quito), Andres Chicaiza (LDU Quito), Jason Mendez (Orlando City)

Forwards: Carlos Garces (Dolphin), Angel Mena (Lion Club), Enner Valencia (UANL Tigres).

Who is the key player for Ecuador?

Antonio Valencia

Over the years, Antonio Valencia has been the face of football in Ecuador, particularly, for his English Premier League stint with Manchester United. After closing his chapter with the Red Devils at the end of this season, the midfielder has taken on a new challenge by signing for new Premier League entrants Sheffield United.

Despite playing little to no football in the just ended season as a result of injury, Valencia is expected to lead La Tricolor with his experience playing at the very highest level of the sport.

What are Ecuador's fixtures at the 2019 Copa America?

Ecuador will start its Copa America campaign against Uruguay before it takes on Chile in its second group game. Hernan Dario Gomez's men will play against invited guests Japan in the final group match.

What are the odds of Ecuador winning the 2019 Copa America?

While the unpredictability of football cannot be overruled, Ecuador has not been convincing enough in recent games to fuel the view that an upset could be on the cards. On paper, La Tricolor ranks below the likes of hosts Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, among others.

As things stand, progressing out of its group featuring Japan, Chile and Uruguay remains the biggest test. Should the unprecedented happen leading to a surprise qualification into the knockout phase, then Hernan Dario Gomez's boys may have it in them to potentially upset the odds.
