The Argentine ace failed to have an influence in the outcome of the game, especially after Liverpool's third goal. Here's a closer look at his stats.

Once again, Lionel Messi will have to wait one more year to try and win his fifth UEFA Champions League title.

The Argentine ace had vowed to do everything in his power to win the continental competition, but he fell short in his attempt despite his impressive form in the Group Stage and in the previous rounds.

To make matters worse, Messi failed to have an impact on today's game, despite his many efforts. Yes, he may have been involved in all of Barcelona's eight attempts against Liverpool, but he failed to produce a single chance with over 23 minutes left to play, just when his team still had a chance to change the way things were going for Los Blaugranas.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Messi lost the ball 17 times, the second highest amount among Barcelona players behind Jordi Alba (21). Furthermore, he only touched the ball 41 times, which also hints that Liverpool's marking against him was spot on. Speaking about direct free kicks, his only shot on goal was deflected by Liverpool's wall.

Things get really ugly for Messi when his fans realize that he has not scored a single away goal beyond the Round of 16 in over six years. In fact, he has only scored six goals in the semi-final stages of the competition out of the 112 he's found the back of the net.
